South America's Golden Tiger
Secluded in the rugged northern province of Corrientes and located 600 kilometers north of Buenos Aires, Los Gringos Lodge sits at the mouth of the junction of the Corriente and Parana Rivers. Winding for kilometers, this labyrinth of rivers and lagoons, plains and bogs hold incredible numbers of unique fish and game, still unspoiled and undisturbed throughout the years.
Los Gringos Lodge
Here in Argentina, the waters team with some of the most exotic freshwater fish in the world the most famous of which is the Golden Dorado. In fact, more varieties of fish are caught in Corrientes Province alone, than in most other parts of South America. Full of energy and fight, the Dorado, Surubí, Pacú and Piranha will have you wondering why you didn’t discover Los Gringos Lodge sooner.
The freshwater Dorado, caught here, is known in Argentina as the "River Tiger" and is considered to be among the most challenging native freshwater game fish of South America. It is a radiant, yellow-colored, salmon-like fish with an almost total bone mouth and strong triangular teeth that force us to use steel leaders. Unlike its cousin the salmon, it does not die after spawning and never swims in the ocean. An exceptionally strong swimmer, the Dorado normally ranges in size from 5 to 20 pounds, although the world record is 70 pounds. This voracious fish could accurately be described as a cross between a bull terrier and a tarpon. It hammers top-water flies with reckless abandon and immediately explodes out of the water in a series of outrageous jumps and relentless, line stripping runs. Its physical beauty, its violent strike, its long powerful runs, and its acrobatic fights are some of the qualities that make the Dorado the exceptional sport fish that it is.
There is also a well kept secret about Dorado… they are a fly-fisherman’s dream come true.
