when eight diehard anglers found themselves to be the first group of the season, amid optimal water levels. Fishing a well-rounded mix of topwater and subsurface baits, the group recorded an incredible 196 peacocks over 10 pounds, with 13 fish weighing more than 20 pounds!
Scott Jones took top honors with a 23-pound monster, while Steve Cihat notched four 20+-pounders for himself. And every other member of the 8-angler group landed at least one 20-pounder, with most achieving lifetime personal bests. Wearing out a Yozuri Tobimaru, Rick Robertson recorded the most fish over 10 pounds, with a weekís total of 35 trophy peacocks.
Itís truly amazing that the Pasimoni -- which was the Amazonís first real trophy destination for American anglers -- continues to produce such awesome fish tallies nearly two decades after it was first opened. Contributing factors include a great natural fishery with lots of lagoons, rocks and other superb peacock habitat. Exclusive sportfishing rights limit the region to FishQuest and a few Venezuelan groups, while recent political squabbles tend to keep all but a few hardy adventurers away from this remote area.
Footnotes: A Venezuelan group coming in immediately after our FishQuest party landed eight 20+ pound peacocks, including a 24-pound supergrande. A week later, another FishQuest team tallied an unbelievable nineteen 20+ pounders up to 25-1/2. Doing the math, that means a three-week total of 40 fish over twenty pounds!
Caveat: For any peacock fishing trip, our advice is not get too caught up in a numbers trap, but to enjoy the experience on its own merits and adventures.
Final footnote: As of press-time, four spots still remain available on our March 16-25 trip.
